Amanda Tapping

Director - actress - producer and a real "goofball at heart"

Both fans around the world and her colleagues speak highly of the blonde whirlwind from Canada. She appeals to people with her special attributes: kindness, grace, caring, modesty, down-to-earthness, the ability to listen, entertaining and humorous. Whenever you have the opportunity to speak to Amanda, sooner or later she emphasizes again and again how important kindness, respect and the encouragement of others are to her. And that she tries to improve her little corner of the world because, in her opinion, as a "privileged person" she sees a moral obligation for herself. More recently she has also spoken openly and honestly about her self-respect and self-esteem, the lack of which she has struggled with for years.

Amanda Tapping is not only an actress and director, an activist and a woman!
She is a role model - and inspiring both professionally and privately!

Sanctuary

After Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, Amanda was looking for a new challenge. She wanted to continue acting, but also work as a director. She entered a completely new area with the role of executive producer. Amanda found "Sanctuary" and Helen Magnus.

Dr. Helen Magnus (Amanda Tapping), doctor and scientist (born 1850 in Victorian England) and her daughter Ashley (Emilie Ullerup) run the "Sanctuary", a refuge for abnormal beings. Together with her protégé Dr. Will Zimmerman (Robert Dunne) and Henry Foss (Ryan Robbins), Helen fights against evil and tries to make the world a better place. It is interesting to note that Helen Magnus is 157 years old and that her colleagues John Druitt, Nikola Tesla, James Watson and Nigel Griffin are also very old and have special abilities.

Brown instead of blonde
Anyone who had seen Stargate suddenly had to get used to it, because Amanda suddenly had dark hair. It was a very conscious decision that she made with the coloring and length of her hair. She wanted to ensure that the character of Helen Magnus was completely separate from that of Sam Carter, not only in terms of character, but also visually. However, her little daughter was unhappy with this decision, as she missed her mother's blonde hair very much. Incidentally, the photo of "Helen Magnus with her daughter Ashley" that can be seen in the opening credits is actually a private photo that shows Amanda with her daughter Olivia.

Multitasking
Amanda also directed three episodes of Sanctuary: Veritas - Nothing but the Truth (S02E07), One Night - The Ghost Ship (S03E13) and Uprising (S04E02).

Interesting to know
Sanctuary began in 2007 as several webisodes each lasting 15-20 minutes. A television company eventually acquired the series and commissioned 13 episodes for 2008. The series attempted to be a low-budget production that would meet high standards. Since the producers retained their influence over the duration of the series, a sophisticated series could be made. Since "Sanctuary" was to be a purely Canadian series - filmed, produced and performed in Canada by Canadians - from the second season onwards they looked for a Canadian composer for the soundtrack and found him in Andrew Lockington.

Always there for others
For Amanda, the show was mainly about giving people a sense of belonging and a safe place, no matter how "abnormal" they may look and act. Since Amanda has relevant personal experiences with people who had been marginalized - including her own brother - she wanted to implement the spirit of inclusion on set, where she tried to make every person feel welcome. She tried to give everyone the same conditions and the same respect. It didn't matter to her whether they cleaned the set, handed out the food or produced the series.

English is not the same as English
Several native English speakers criticized Helen Magnus' accent as a bad British accent. However, this "dirty" accent was deliberately chosen by Amanda, since Helen Magnus not only spoke the English of the Victorian era, but due to her longevity was also exposed to the influence of other countries, other languages and other, more modern times and this fact has influenced her accent over the years.
